Solar Pool Skimmers: Steps, Ledges & Pool Shape

Pool fit is about the route a floating machine can travel, not just the pool's outline. Measure relevant shallow areas and inspect the surface-level obstacles before buying. Then compare those observations with the exact model manual. A robot advertised for many pool shapes still deserves a supervised fit check in your particular pool.

Make a surface obstacle sketch

Draw a simple overhead view and mark each entry step, tanning shelf, ladder, attached spa, and narrow connection. Add the places where debris usually gathers. You do not need a precise architectural drawing; the purpose is to make potential trouble spots visible before a purchase.

Photograph the same areas at your normal operating water level. A description such as kidney-shaped leaves out the ledge or overhang that could matter more to the skimmer's route.

Check shallow areas using model instructions

Betta's FAQ lists different minimum depths: 5 inches for SE, 3.5 inches for SE Plus, and 6 inches for Flex. These are not interchangeable permissions. Measure the areas the machine could reach, not only the depth in the middle of the pool.

Write the relevant requirement beside each shallow location. If a shelf is unsuitable, ask the manufacturer about its recommended approach rather than assuming the robot's obstacle sensing will prevent every entry.

Treat accessories as model-specific

Some Betta manuals describe adjustable anti-stranding bars. Consult the diagram for your version before using them; do not copy the position seen on another owner's machine. Record the supplied accessory arrangement so that any approved adjustment can be reversed accurately.

Do not improvise added weights, cut parts, or relocate sensors to make a poor fit appear acceptable. A clear photograph and measurement give manufacturer support a better basis for advice.

Watch the first route, not just the first minute

Observe from a stable location while the robot encounters the different parts of the pool. Note whether a difficult location is a one-off event or a repeated pattern. Record the approach direction and whether the machine can leave without intervention. A short video is more useful than a general report that it gets stuck.

Do not keep placing the robot back into the same jam. Pause the evaluation and compare the location with the manual before attempting another run.

Separate shape problems from other causes

If the robot repeatedly stops beside one feature, investigate fit. If its behavior changes everywhere, the troubleshooting guide may be more useful. This distinction helps avoid replacing a machine for a basket issue or treating a genuine clearance problem as insufficient charging.

Before the return period ends, decide whether all important collection areas are reasonably reachable under the manufacturer's permitted setup. Preserve the packaging and your observations until that evaluation is complete.

Does a large pool necessarily need a different skimmer?

Size is only one question. Reachable surface area, obstacles, debris, and charging all belong in the comparison.
