Betta SE: Solar-Only Charging, Pool Fit and Tradeoffs

What the SE includes

Betta lists a 200-micron basket, twin salt/chlorine-tolerant motors and a handheld remote. The SE manual explicitly excludes AC, DC and USB charging ports. The manufacturer's advertised runtime is 30-plus hours after a full charge, with solar recharging estimated at five to six hours in direct sunlight. Those are manufacturer estimates under its stated conditions, not a promise of uninterrupted operation in every yard.

The current product comparison lists the SE for above-ground and in-ground pools and gives an ideal coverage figure up to 40 by 60 feet. Treat that area as a screening claim, not proof that the robot can navigate every shelf, ladder, return flow or narrow passage inside that footprint.

Decide around your pool's sunshine

Observe the water at several points during the day before choosing a solar-only machine. A pool can look sunny at noon yet spend much of its usable charging window under a fence, roof or tree shadow. Think about the months when you actually need skimming, including leaf season, rather than assessing only the brightest summer afternoon.

If you would be frustrated by pausing operation during several dull days, compare the SE Plus before purchasing. The useful question is whether you need an independent way to replenish the battery. A more complicated feature list is less relevant than solving that specific limitation.

Separate minimum depth from anti-stranding hardware

Betta's current FAQ publishes a 5-inch minimum operating depth for SE. The SE manual also documents adjustable anti-stranding bars in paired front or rear positions, but Betta's current model-comparison table does not give SE the branded Shallow Water Safeguard marker used for SE Plus. Do not turn that naming difference into an unsupported hardware conclusion: use the 5-inch floor, follow the SE manual for its bars and ask Betta about an unusual ledge before purchase.

Bars intended to reduce stranding do not make a shallower shelf compatible or guarantee that the entire shelf will be cleaned. Measure the shallowest reachable route, not only the main basin, and inspect how a ladder or overhang affects the robot's sensors.

Know what the lights and remote change

The manual separates automatic, remote, intermittent, sleep and strand indications. Pressing the handheld remote puts the SE into manual control; the center button held for two seconds returns it to automatic mode, and the manual says two minutes without remote input also returns it automatically. Solid green therefore means remote control, not normal autonomous navigation.

Flashing red indicates low-battery intermittent operation, while no lights can mean very low charge or a fully discharged battery. Red-and-green flashing is a strand condition associated with restricted propeller or impeller movement. Use the model's troubleshooting sequence rather than treating every stopped unit as a failed battery.

Pool chemistry and operating boundaries

The manual allows salty water up to 5,000 ppm and lists a one-year manufacturer warranty; seawater use is excluded. Betta's current FAQ separately says chlorine should remain below 20 ppm. These are maximum-condition limits, not targets for pool chemistry.

The current web manual says not to use SE while another pool-cleaning device is in the pool, while Betta's general FAQ now describes a possible hose-clearance arrangement for some wired underwater cleaners. Because those instructions conflict, follow the exact manual supplied with the unit and obtain model-specific written guidance before simultaneous operation. Remove the robot before swimming.
