Solar Pool Skimmers With Pool Covers and Solar Blankets
Use your solar skimmer while the pool is fully uncovered, then retrieve it before deploying a pool cover or solar blanket. That is our recommended household routine, not a claim that every cover and robot combination has been compatibility-tested. Check both manufacturers’ instructions. Cover-Pools’ T4 owner manual explicitly directs owners to remove objects from the pool before covering it.

Separate the two jobs in your daily routine
A floating skimmer collects debris from exposed water. A cover occupies that surface when deployed. Plan which job happens first instead of expecting a robot to work under or push past the covering. We have not verified under-cover operation for the models in this guide.
For a pool that stays covered most of the day, write down the actual uncovered periods before choosing a solar-only model. A large headline runtime does not answer whether the panel receives enough useful charging light during your routine. Consider the exact model’s documented backup charging if those periods are short or shaded.
Make retrieval part of closing the pool
Before touching the cover control or spreading the blanket, locate the skimmer, retrieve it using its manual’s procedure, and place it at its designated storage spot. Visually confirm it is out of the pool. A remote stop command alone leaves the machine in the cover’s path.
Put a short reminder beside the household closing checklist: robot retrieved, floating accessories accounted for, cover path checked, then cover operated according to its own manual. Where one person handles the robot and another closes the cover, use a visible storage location that makes the handoff easy to confirm.
Keep solar blankets fully clear for skimming
Remove and store the blanket and its straps as its instructions require before starting the robot. Do not leave a rolled edge or loose section floating across the cleaning route as an improvised boundary. A partial opening is not evidence that the robot can safely navigate the remaining surface.
If you plan to swim after skimming, retrieve the robot first and follow the cover’s complete-removal instructions. Doheny’s own above-ground reel manual requires removal of its solar cover and reel assembly before swimming; other systems need their own instructions rather than an assumed shared setup.
Choose storage that suits the robot
Give the retrieved robot a stable place away from the cover track, reel mechanism, and walking route. Follow its temperature and storage precautions. Betta’s SE manual warns against leaving the unit unattended in a hot, dry location outside the pool; the top of a sunny cover housing is therefore a poor default parking spot.
Do not assume a protective cover sold for the robot itself is a charging accessory. Storage covers, pool covers, and solar blankets have different purposes. Use the model’s charging instructions separately from the storage arrangement.
Restart with a deliberate opening sequence
Open the pool completely using the cover’s instructions, clear the robot’s route, and inspect the skimmer’s basket and condition. Enable only the intended cleaning session or schedule once the pool is ready. If automated schedules are used, check them after several covered days so an old setting does not surprise the next operator.

Can a solar pool skimmer work beneath a solar blanket?
We have not verified that use. Our recommended routine is full cover removal before skimming and robot retrieval before covering.
Can I close an automatic cover after switching the skimmer off?
Retrieve it first. Switching it off does not remove it from the cover’s path.
Is a skimmer worthwhile if my pool is usually covered?
Compare the uncovered debris workload and charging opportunity with the cost and handling involved. A cover-heavy routine can reduce the useful job available to the robot.
